Maintaining Top Side Control

Technique Description:

Generally recommended notes for maintaining side control on top:

  • One arm should be near side (under head, or posted on the ground at opponent's hips) and one arm far side (elbow into soft part of opponent's side or elbow on floor, gripping person’s arm) when on top.  This gives you maximum control and limits your opponent's ability to recompose guard or sweep you.
  • The other two potential side control positions are when both arms are far side and both arms are near side
  • Pressure down hard against opponent with both shoulder pressure and by pressing your torso into your opponent's ribs
  • You should stay on your toes to excert maximum pressure.
